1. On Duty, Not Driving – When the driver is working but not actively driving, such as during loading or unloading.
2. Driving – When the driver is operating the vehicle.
3. Off Duty – When the driver is not working and is free to rest or take personal time
4. Sleeper Berth – When the driver is in the sleeper berth of the vehicle, resting.
5. On Duty, Driving – Active driving and on-duty status combined (used for compliance purposes).

Yes, the ELD Rule allows the use of smartphones (Android/iPhone) and other wireless devices as ELDs, provided they meet the required technical standards. If you're unsure whether a particular device qualifies, you can verify its compliance by checking the FMCSA's Registered ELDs list.

An ELD (Electronic Logging Device) is a device that automatically records a driver’s driving time and tracks various aspects of their hours-of-service (HOS) records. It monitors a vehicle’s engine to collect data such as whether the engine is running, whether the vehicle is moving, the miles driven, and the total engine operation time (engine hours). With an ELD, law enforcement officers can review a driver's HOS either by accessing the display screen, getting a printout, or retrieving the data electronically from the device.

The FMCSA's ELD mandate officially took effect on December 18, 2017. By this date, all drivers and carriers required to comply with the mandate needed to have either an ELD or an AOBRD installed in their vehicles. However, after December 16, 2019, AOBRDs were no longer acceptable for compliance. If your fleet is still using AOBRDs, it is no longer in compliance with the ELD mandate.
